My health journey has been a lifelong evolution, filled with challenges, discoveries, and growth. It started when I was just 12 years old. I began having grand mal seizures—unpredictable and terrifying episodes that always seemed to strike when I was most relaxed, usually in the middle of the night or early morning.
At first, no one really understood what was happening. I remember having a seizure during a sleepover. My friend’s mom, who was a nurse, was understandably concerned. When I came to, I begged her not to tell anyone. I was so embarrassed and confused. My parents had a nonchalant response: "It sounds like seizures," but there was no urgency or further exploration.
When I moved to Colorado at 14, things escalated. One night, I woke up with a piercing ringing in my ears and an overwhelming sense of dread. I knew I was about to have a seizure. I told my mom, wanting her to witness what was happening to me. After preparing myself, I lay down and slipped into the seizure. My mom panicked, turned on the lights, and called 911. I’ll never forget the embarrassment of waking up groggy, having peed the bed, and being rushed to the ER.
That night marked the beginning of my deeper understanding of my health. Tests confirmed a seizure disorder, but there was no clear cause. One theory was oxygen deprivation at birth, a complication that required me to be resuscitated. I was placed on medication commonly prescribed for elderly patients, which left me groggy and exhausted throughout high school. It was a difficult time—I didn’t want anyone to know about my condition.
At 16, I moved out of my parents' home and began juggling high school, work, and my health. Unable to afford my medication, I weaned myself off it and decided to take a natural approach. Around this time, organic food was gaining popularity, and I began learning about its benefits. I cut out soda, switched to organic milk and meat, and started exercising regularly. These small changes helped me manage my seizures and gave me a sense of control.
As I got older, I began researching the impact of hormones and chemicals on health. I realized that the hormones in processed foods and even the chemicals in everyday products could be affecting my seizures and overall well-being. This awareness fueled my journey into fitness and holistic health. I became a yoga instructor, earning my 200-hour certification, and immersed myself in a lifestyle that prioritized mind, body, and spirit.
This journey has also led me to embrace Ayurvedic practices, which have been around for over 5,000 years. Ayurveda emphasizes the balance of mind, body, and environment, and it’s shifted how I approach everything in my life. I’ve begun transitioning all my products—clothing, hygiene items, and even household cleaners—to non-toxic, chemical-free options. It’s a slow process, but it’s happening. Companies like Wellco have been instrumental in helping me make these changes.
I’ve learned how even fabrics can impact our bodies. The chemicals in clothing, particularly those we sweat in, can seep into the skin and affect us over time. That realization prompted me to prioritize natural and sustainable materials in my wardrobe, with brands like Colorado Threads (use code LUNAMAMA 15% OFF)supporting this transition. The same goes for everything I use—my toothpaste, hair products, makeup, and cleaning supplies are now carefully selected to be free from harmful chemicals. This transition extends to my entire family, from their hygiene routines to what we eat, drink, and use in our home.
Fast forward to my first pregnancy—I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. This was another wake-up call. Monitoring my blood sugar and tracking what I ate became second nature, and I began to see how deeply food impacts our health. With my second pregnancy, I needed more sugar. So, there is a fine-tuning and balancing to all things. After giving birth, I struggled with severe postpartum depression, which was a fog I couldn’t shake. Desperate for clarity, I experimented with my diet again, this time adopting a pescatarian approach. Within weeks, the fog lifted, and I felt like myself again.
With both pregnancies, I had home births. After spending so much time in the hospital and knowing the healthcare system, I knew I needed a different approach to bring life into this world. Obviously, my seizures were a major concern for my midwives, but with a doctor’s note stating it had been more than 10 years since my last seizure and my commitment to a health-conscious lifestyle, they were glad to support the experience I wanted.
After my second pregnancy, I decided to eliminate meat altogether. I realized how much better my body felt without it. Now, I get my nutrition from whole foods, plant-based sources, and supplements like magnesium and my daily elixir with coconut water. This holistic approach keeps my mind, body, and soul balanced, which is essential for showing up for my family.
Recently, I’ve committed to a vegan lifestyle, starting with a 60-day challenge that provides meal plans, recipes, and everything I need to succeed. My husband and I are embracing this as a new chapter in our health journey for 2025. The Vegan Challenge has been an incredible resource, making it easy to transition and stay motivated. It’s not just about the food—it’s about being present, taking care of ourselves, and setting an example for our children.
My daily routine begins with brushing my teeth and tongue scraping to eliminate harmful germs. I still enjoy my morning coffee, followed by a light breakfast and my vitamins from Wellco while I journal. Once my kiddos go down for a nap, this becomes my time to disconnect from the noise. I practice yoga to get movement in, calm my mind with meditation and breathing exercises, and focus on what truly matters. These habits help me manage my stress levels and stay centered throughout the day.
Starting my business, Luna Mama, has been a pivotal moment. It has brought me back to who I am. Through changes in how I market myself, I’ve reconnected with my true beliefs, supported by companies and habits that align with my values. Luna Mama is more than a business—it’s a mission to change how we approach work and life. I aim to lead passionately and kindly, helping others create income streams, side hustles, and online businesses. It’s about serving others on their journey and empowering them to take control of their lives.
Now entering my 40s, I’ve come to deeply understand that what you eat, wear, and use truly defines how you feel physically and mentally. It’s a continuous process of learning, evolving, and prioritizing self-care. I’m proud of how far I’ve come and excited to see where this path leads. If you’re considering a change, start small, listen to your body, and trust the process. You deserve to feel your best—mind, body, and soul.
