Embracing the Flow: How Movement and Mindfulness Anchor My Mental Health

Writer: Cassie BartlettCassie Bartlett

There are days when getting out of bed feels like an uphill battle. The weight of life transitions, especially motherhood, can sometimes bring a sense of doubt and guilt that lingers in the mind. The mental load can feel overwhelming, affecting everything from your daily routine to your self-worth. I know this struggle all too well—the moments of questioning, the nagging guilt of not always feeling like the best mom, and the pressure to be the perfect version of myself. It’s in these moments that mental health awareness becomes essential. Acknowledging how stress, anxiety, and depression can shape your thoughts, your energy, and your motivation is the first step toward healing.

This struggle is not unique. Research consistently shows the importance of mental wellness, especially for mothers navigating the complex, ever-changing landscape of parenthood. The *World Health Organization* (WHO) states that good mental health is fundamental to overall health and well-being, enabling individuals to manage stress, relate to others, and make life decisions. In fact, WHO emphasizes that addressing mental health is key to maintaining the balance necessary to thrive during life transitions like motherhood.

Additionally, studies have shown that mothers, particularly new mothers, are at higher risk of mental health challenges like postpartum depression, anxiety, and stress. According to a study published in the *Journal of Affective Disorders*, up to 1 in 7 women experience postpartum depression, with many others facing high levels of anxiety. This underscores the need for proactive mental health strategies and tools that help mitigate these challenges and promote resilience.

Movement as a Tool for Mental Health -As a yoga practitioner and long-time athlete, I’ve leaned on movement and mindfulness to help shift my thoughts when they feel heavy. Research backs up the positive link between physical activity and mental wellness. According to the *American Psychological Association* (APA), exercise reduces levels of the body's stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol, and stimulates the production of endorphins, chemicals in the brain that are natural mood lifters.

Whether it’s Peloton, Pilates, Barre, yoga, or hiking—each form of movement allows me to dream of something better, to embrace the adventure in front of me. Even a simple five-minute stretch can make a huge difference. On days when I plan out my workouts, it’s not just about fitness. It’s about aligning my physical activity with my mental well-being. The APA also notes that regular exercise improves sleep, increases energy, and provides a positive focus during times of stress.

Small Acts of Self-Care Can Shift Your Mindset -It may sound small, but putting on the right outfit can truly shift your mindset. For me, it’s my go-to Colorado Threads gear—their black floral designs aren’t just beautiful; they help me reconnect with myself. The pop of color, the softness of the material, and knowing I’m supporting a sustainable, American brand that aligns with my values make all the difference. On days when negative thoughts creep in and when the heaviness of depression looms, I remind myself that I’m doing something good for both my body and my mind. The toxins I’m shedding aren’t just physical but mental and emotional.

One particular morning stands out. I woke up feeling low, unsure of how I could muster the energy to teach yoga. The cloud of doubt was so heavy that I almost called off the class. But then, I caught a glimpse of my favorite floral leggings. Something clicked. I slipped them on, feeling the softness against my skin and the burst of color boosting my mood. Suddenly, I felt just a little more ready to face the day.

That morning, as I made my way to the studio, the weight started to lift. My outfit, which I had chosen as a small act of self-care, had created a shift in my energy. By the time I arrived at the studio, I felt inspired—not just for myself but for the practice I was about to share with my students.

As I prepared to teach, I focused on my intention: to create a flow that mirrored my journey that morning. I wanted to guide my students through a practice that honored the fluctuations of life—just like the waves of doubt and guilt that had weighed me down that very morning. I wove my intention into every sequence, letting my energy and creative space flow from the confidence my outfit had sparked.

The class was beautiful, not because everything was perfect but because it felt real. My students moved through the flow, connecting with their breath, and I could see the same shifts happening within them that had started in me that morning. I realized that sometimes, the smallest actions—like wearing an outfit that lifts your spirit—can create the space needed for transformation, both mentally and physically.

Mental Wellness: A Lifelong Practice -Even on days when the rain pours or the heat feels unbearable, I know I’m equipped with tools to shift my perspective. Life is full of transitions, full of doubt, but it’s also full of opportunities to rediscover yourself, shift your energy, and embrace each moment with gratitude.

Research supports the idea that mental wellness is not a one-time fix but an ongoing practice. According to the *National Alliance on Mental Illness* (NAMI), staying aware of your mental health and actively managing stress is crucial to building resilience over time. Practices like mindfulness, self-care routines, physical activity, and even setting small, attainable goals can have a profound impact on mental well-being.

Finding Your Anchor- If you’re feeling stuck or weighed down by life’s challenges, find that one thing that lights you up. It might be an outfit that makes you feel powerful, a workout that brings you joy, or a few moments of mindfulness to reset your thoughts. Whatever it is, hold onto it and allow it to guide you through the day. Because life is too short to let those moments of doubt define you. Let yourself wear what you love, move in ways that excite you, and know that you’re doing your best—because that’s enough.

And if you ever find yourself wondering how to move forward, remember that even the smallest acts of self-care can create the space for something beautiful. For me, that day started with a pair of leggings and ended with a meaningful, healing practice for both me and my students. Let yourself find those moments, and allow them to guide you toward joy.

Mental wellness is a vital component of overall health, and recognizing its importance is the key to navigating life’s transitions. When life feels overwhelming, leaning into practices that foster self-care, mindfulness, and physical well-being can make all the difference. Movement, no matter how small, serves as a reminder that we are strong, capable, and worthy of taking up space in our lives.
